What about free speech?

August 10th, 2008 by MM2H

free speechYesterday the Bar Council wanted to debate about ’something’, but they had to cut their talks short due to a massive protest outside that almost turned out overly violent.

The ’something’ subject was about religion… Unfortunately I cannot say more as the discussion was interrupted by people that don’t believe in discussions…

Before the discussion started politicians announced it on national Tv that there was going to be held a debate about religion. Again notice the vagueness about what exactly the discussion would be about.

Of course without better information, uninformed people would think their religion would be at stake, therefore it should be stopped before even listening to what it is all about.

Didn’t we have a PM saying he would listen to the people? But how can you listen to the people when other people keep them from speaking up?

How to find win-win solutions without listening to what is on people’s mind?

I do remember the TV debate between Anwar and a BN PM a few weeks ago. Although time is short and you cannot solve all problems in one hour, at least you open a discussion and hear what 2 people think about the matter.

With the Bar Council, I still have no clue what it was all about if I only follow the national TV and newspapers…

Free speech only works when:

  • people respect one another

  • people listen to each other

  • people are allowed to speak
