Zaid Ibrahim – former Malaysian Minister of Law – quotes in a Rotary Club speech today in Kuala Lumpur:
… it might be appropriate for me to speak about the leadership transition that has been foisted upon us Malaysians.
I say ‘foisted’ because neither me nor anyone in this room had any role or say in the choice of the person who will lead Malaysia next. We were mere bystanders in a political chess game.
This only points out the difference between the democratic ideal and reality.
The ideal that the will of the people shall rules, versus how politicians have changed the laws of the political game in favor of staying in power.
Now this is nothing new: wasn’t Hillary Clinton leading over Obama with the popular vote, but Obama won over Clinton because well: he just followed the rules and regulations in place in America democracy.
Again, this only points out the difference between the democratic ideal and reality. Just do your homework and find the countries that state: he who will have the most votes will automatically become Prime Minister.
The one thing we have to salute the US for is that finally race wasn’t an issue when it came to ruling the country. A big change compared to Luther King who got shot for speaking out his mind a mere 50 years ago.
