3 months ago I was in Taiping ordering my favorite popia (which is a kind of spring roll or pan cake, yet not deep fried as the well known Vietnamese spring rolls).

Apart from it being as delicious, it cost me RM 1.00. (about 1 third of a US dollar).

2 months ago I went back to my favorite food stall and the price of my popia now was RM 1.20.

And this weekend the price went up again to RM 1.50.

That’s 50% more than 3 months ago!

Today parliament will debate the similar rice price hike. A popular brand shot up to RM29.39 for a 10 kilo bag this week from about RM20 in January.

How the Government replies when prices go up

"The price of rice in Malaysia is lower by at least three RM per kilogramme compared to Thailand and Indonesia, and much lower compared to Singapore," said Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Shahrir Abdul Samad yesterday.

Fair enough, but using this tactics, how do you explain that cars in Malaysia are twice as expensive compared to Europe?

Not to mention what the locals normally use to answer me: if you live in Malaysia, then take it as it is without comparing to other countries… Well, I do love the Malaysian food though
